No Covid vaccine mandate leads to school shutdowns. Think about that for a moment. I don’t need to think about it because it became a reality for my granddaughter and me.
On August 25th, 2021, my granddaughter started the 5th grade in a charter school. By Monday, September 13th, her school closed the 5th grade.
And by Wednesday the 15th, she was tested for Covid-19, again. This shutdown happened because one teacher, one person tested positive for Covid-19.
This one event shut down the entire fifth grade. The shutdown resulted in parents scrambling to get their children tested. And find a way to quarantine their children until the end of the month.
So how in the hell did this happen? The answer is simple, no covid vaccine mandate.

Instead, we have weekly testing instead of vaccination. The problem is, as it has always been, weekly testing is flawed.
The flaw is obvious. By the time testing catches the virus, a person could have passed the virus on to many people. This scenario happened in my granddaughter’s school. And it did not stop there.
Unvaccinated Teachers And Staff
Testing, whether weekly or bi-weekly, can have catastrophic results where the population is unvaccinated children. The closing of a public school one week after opening is proof that the weekly testing is not a replacement for vaccination. Consider the following.

The United Federation of Teachers refuses to do the right thing. Protect children under their care by supporting the mandating of vaccination for all school personnel.
You would think that the full approval of the Pfizer vaccine removed any reason to refuse vaccination. And the fact that most teachers and staff have taken the vaccine has not changed the mindset of UFT leadership. Sadly no. The UFT sides with the unvaccinated minority while claiming the students are their babies. And that they care about them. If this is how they care about my grand-baby, I don’t need it.
History Of Mandated Vaccines In Schools and Beyond
In 1855 Massachusetts became the first state to mandate vaccines for schools. They put this mandate into place to combat smallpox.
In 1905, in the case of Jacobson vs. Massechuttes. The court ruled that State Police Power allows states to mandate vaccines. See my article Vaccine Facts What You Need To Know to learn more about vaccine mandates.
The vaccine for Covid-19 is not the only mandated vaccine. Before covid’s arrival, kids had to have various types of vaccinations. You know the ones. Measles, Mumps and Rubella. Without them, your child cannot attend school.
That said, where do teachers get the notion that they don’t have to follow the covid vaccine mandate. But school children do.
This question has been debated and answered. You would think the educated would know this.
Religious Exemption
New York State Governor Hochul has stated that no religious institute has stressed religious exemption. How true this is, I do not know, but let’s look at it another way.
Even if you have religious reasons for not taking the vaccine, you cannot impose your vulnerability on others.
In other words, society has the right to protect itself from imminent danger. That includes barring people from working with unvaccinated children and people with compromised immune systems. What does this mean?
It means you cannot work in an environment where you are a threat to a person’s health.
It also means that the state can impose vaccination requirements. And that the state can support an employer’s right to require them too.
With the state mandating vaccines, a business can issue a covid vaccine mandate as a condition of employment.
Note, New York is one of the states that allow religious, medical, and philosophical exemptions from mandated vaccines. New York also has police powers which, can be used to supersede these exemptions. As has been seen in court cases where the judgment supports the state’s mandate, so far.
Options
Does this mean automatic termination from your job? Not necessarily. Because this is a change in the requirements for employment enacted after you were employed, owners should be required to find a different position for you. If this position exists, you should be offered it.
But if after a good-faith effort to find a new position, none is found. Then the employer can release you.
Union Leaders And Lawyers Promote A New Segregation
One last thing, I blame union leaders and lawyers for the continued resistance to a common-sense end to the pandemic. Both these entities know or should know that public safety supersedes personal choice. Failure to disclose this creates false hope. It also prolongs the threat of the virus.
Its ultimate result is the creation of a new type of segregation, the vaccinated and the unvaccinated.
No Covid Vaccine Mandate: Update
Update, My granddaughter’s school reopened before the end of the month. All of us tested negative.
Update, A week later she had to do remote learning because there were not enough teachers for two days. To date, nothing is in place to prevent this from happening again.
In the meantime, children continue to get sick as adults fail to protect them.
