Remote Learning Classes
The following is a short chronology of what happens without a plan for remote learning classes. The events here illustrate what my grandchild has endured this school term..
I say some because it has happened more times than I know.
So, I have taken to not counting the times. Instead, I now adjust my schedule to accommodate last-minute notifications of remote learning classes.
Remote Learning Classes: What Lack Of Planning Looks Like
On this day, my granddaughter has remote learning. It is early in the school term.
My granddaughter attended her first-morning class without any issues. The next class was a different story. The teacher never opened the Zoom portal. And to this day, I can’t tell you why.
The lack of a class resulted in a 2-hour break for my granddaughter. Part of that break included her regular 30-minute break. For the next hour or so, she sat in front of her laptop waiting, for the class to start.
Class never happened, but lunch did, after which the teacher for her afternoon class did show.
Not The First Time
This scenario is not the first time this has happened since school started. It reminded me of how chaotic remote learning was in the early days of Covid-19. And it shows that not having a plan in place for remote learning classes leads to disaster. But, there is more.
On Fridays, my granddaughter has a half-day. Half-day Fridays result from her starting school at 7:30 and ending at 2:30 Monday-Thursday. My grandchild has had remote learning on Fridays.
When a teacher does not show, it is a wasted day.
Homework?
Add to this a lack of homework assignments or inappropriate homework assignments. What do I mean by inappropriate homework assignments?
By this, I mean homework assignments that do not correspond to the lesson taught that day?
Is this because the teachers are incompetent? Or is it because there is no work prepared for remote teaching? Is that a thing, you ask? Yes, it is.
There have been times when the homework is not on a topic taught that day. So what do you do? If you’re like most parents, you write a note to the teacher informing them of this error. That’s it.
Last Minute Notification
Remote learning notifications have come as late as the morning of classes.
Thanks to text messaging, my daughter has received notices while getting my grandchild ready for school. After which, I get a call asking me to watch my grandchild that day. After all parents of school children still have to go to work. And so it went.
Update
As of this date, 2.15.22, things are somewhat better. Well, as far as I know, that is. My grandchild has received in-person learning since returning to school this year. But the school year is not, over and the teacher shortage still exists.
